The Hero Dogs: Supporting Our First Responders and Civilians
The Hero Dogs are comprised of Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD) certified therapy dog teams. Having passed the official ATD test, you know our teams have put many hours into training with our dogs to make sure they can walk well on leash, greet people appropriately, and most importantly, truly love the work of a therapy dog. Zac and Monica Callahan both have experience in crisis response work, and Zac Callahan is a seasoned first responder, being a veteran, police officer, and a firefighter/paramedic. Monica Callahan is on the board of directors for Alliance of Therapy Dogs. Both teams are excited to mesh their passion of therapy dog work, crisis response, and supporting our first responders.
Current TeamsTherapy Dog OrioMonica and Zac have owned Orio since she was 8 weeks old. She is currently over a year old and has successfully passed her Alliance of Therapy Dogs test. She has also obtained her Canine Good Citizen title. Being certified by Alliance of Therapy Dogs means that each team carries liability insurance through ATD. ATD has one of the highest liability policies out of all the therapy organizations. ATD allows their teams to participate in many different therapy situations including crisis response. Orio has always had an affinity for children and has always enjoyed the company of civilians and first responders in uniform. Her current stations that she works with light up whenever she walks in the room. She has already helped with a few fire safety demonstrations by demonstrating ‘get low and go’ and ‘stop, drop, and roll’. Therapy Dog QuintQuint has officially gained the title of Therapy Dog in the summer of 2020. Quint was rescued from Friendship Animal Protective League who rescued him from a puppy mill who was going to put him to sleep because he was deaf. At four months old, Quint found his new home with us. While he has been a handful in the house, he has always shown calmness in public and enjoys the company of everyone. Even though he turned a year old in May of 2020, we had to hold off a bit on testing because of Covid-19. We are glad to say that we were finally able to finish his testing and he is officially official. Quint can stop, drop, and roll in his own way (hand signals), and can teach kids that just because you might be missing something, doesn’t mean you can’t do whatever you put your mind on.
