The Hero Dogs: Supporting Our First Responders and Civilians
The Hero Dogs are comprised of Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD) certified therapy dog teams. Having passed the official ATD test, you know our teams have put many hours into training with our dogs to make sure they can walk well on leash, greet people appropriately, and most importantly, truly love the work of a therapy dog. Zac and Monica Callahan both have experience in crisis response work, and Zac Callahan is a seasoned first responder, being a veteran, police officer, and a firefighter/paramedic. Monica Callahan is on the board of directors for Alliance of Therapy Dogs. Both teams are excited to mesh their passion of therapy dog work, crisis response, and supporting our first responders.
Monica Callahan and Orio
Zachary Callahan and Orio
Monica and Zac have owned Orio since she was 8 weeks old. She is currently over a year old and has successfully passed her Alliance of Therapy Dogs test. She has also obtained her Canine Good Citizen title. Being certified by Alliance of Therapy Dogs means that each team carries liability insurance through ATD. ATD has one of the highest liability policies out of all the therapy organizations. ATD allows their teams to participate in many different therapy situations including crisis response. Orio has always had an affinity for children and has always enjoyed the company of civilians and first responders in uniform. Her current stations that she works with light up whenever she walks in the room. She has already helped with a few fire safety demonstrations by demonstrating ‘get low and go’ and ‘stop, drop, and roll’. You can follow the adventures of Orio and her brother, Quint, on their instagram: @Orio.The.Fire.Dog
Fire Safety Programs: Whether looking to bring an entire fire safety program to your organization or station, or just to help with your current fire safety demonstration, Orio will accentuate your fire safety programming well. She can demonstrate (in her own doggy ways) how to ‘get low and go’ and ‘stop, drop, and roll’. She is always a crowd pleaser and is always willing to make the rounds as the demonstration goes on. Orio is available for open houses, school programs, and other safety related events.
Crisis Response: Has a crisis just occurred in your school/town/station? The Hero Dogs are always willing to come visit civilians or first responders who may be struggling with a recent crisis that has occurred. No judgement or pressure to talk, dogs do magical things to help people open up and come to terms with what they have just witnessed. Crisis response work is very sensitive work and having handlers that are experienced in crisis response work is a must.
First Responder Therapy: Looking to help boost the moral of your first responders? How about a visit from The Hero Dogs!? We are always willing to come to the station and hang out for awhile!
Reading Programs: Orio has always enjoyed the company of children and we are looking to expand our reading programs with schools, libraries, summer programs, and more! If you’re interested in bringing Orio in for a reading program, don’t hesitate to contact us!
Other: We are always up for different therapy dog events! Not sure if an event is appropriate for therapy dogs? Therapy dogs can be found in many different situations and locations presently. Contact us to see if we can make a therapy dog visit work for you!
Future Hero Dog Quint
Quint is under a year, which means he is not old enough to test with Alliance of Therapy Dogs yet. He is showing amazing potential for therapy work and we can’t wait to see what he is able to accomplish as he grows. Quint is available to visit with the understanding that he would not fall under ATD liability insurance, but would be covered under house/business insurance. Let us know if you’d like a puppy visit!
